Dear Friends,

As believers in Christ, the question of the meaning of life holds profound significance for us. It is a question that transcends time and culture, and it is one that we must contemplate as we follow the teachings of our Lord and Savior.

The meaning of life, according to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Scriptures, can be summarized in several key aspects:

To Know God: The primary purpose of our existence is to know and have a relationship with God. In John 17:3, Jesus says, “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” Our journey in life is a journey toward deeper knowledge of God and His character.

To Love God and Others: In Matthew 22:37–39, Jesus teaches that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and the second is like it, to love your neighbor as yourself. Life gains its fullest meaning when we love God and express that love through our relationships with others.

To Glorify God: In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul instructs, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Our actions, words, and choices should bring glory to God. When we live in a way that reflects His character and purposes, our lives have profound meaning.

To Seek and Do God’s Will: In the Lord’s Prayer, we pray, “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Our lives find purpose when we align our will with God’s will and actively seek to carry out His plan for our lives.

To Be Transformed into Christlikeness: Romans 8:29 tells us that God’s ultimate purpose for us is to be conformed to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ. Life’s meaning is found in the process of becoming more like Christ in character and conduct.

To Share the Gospel: As followers of Christ, we are entrusted with the mission of sharing the good news of salvation through Him. This act of sharing the gospel and making disciples is a central purpose of our lives (Matthew 28:19–20).

To Find Joy and Fulfillment in God: Ultimately, our deepest joy and fulfillment come from our relationship with God. As the psalmist declares, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence, there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11).

In conclusion, the meaning of life, as understood by the early Church and taught by Jesus Christ, is a life devoted to knowing, loving, and serving God. It is a life characterized by love for others, the pursuit of holiness, and the fulfillment of God’s purposes. As we journey together in faith, let us remember that our ultimate meaning and purpose are found in Christ alone.

May your lives be a reflection of these truths as you continue to walk in the footsteps of our Lord.
