Dear Friends,

Today, I write to you about a topic that might seem unsettling, but it is one we cannot ignore — the preparation for our own death. In a world where the Christian faith was often met with persecution and uncertainty, knowing how to prepare for death was not just a spiritual matter but a practical necessity.

Faith in Eternal Life: The foundation of our preparation lies in our faith in Jesus Christ and the promise of eternal life. We must firmly believe that death is not the end but a transition to a glorious eternity with our Lord. As Paul wrote, “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). This faith gives us hope and assurance.

Repentance and Forgiveness: Regularly examining our hearts and repenting of our sins is vital. Confession and repentance cleanse our souls and reaffirm our relationship with God. It’s a practice of humbling ourselves before Him and seeking His forgiveness. We should also extend forgiveness to others, as the Lord’s Prayer reminds us.

Living a Life of Love: Jesus emphasized love as the greatest commandment. Our lives should be characterized by love for God and love for our neighbors. By living out the principles of love, compassion, and servanthood, we prepare our hearts for eternity.

Stewardship of Resources: The early Church understood the importance of stewardship. Managing our resources wisely, being generous, and supporting the work of the Church and those in need is part of our preparation. We should consider how our earthly possessions can be used for God’s glory even after we are gone.

Mentoring and Discipleship: Preparing the next generation of believers is a significant aspect of our responsibility. Mentoring and discipling others in the faith ensures the continuity of God’s work on Earth. Passing on our knowledge, wisdom, and faith is an essential part of our legacy.

Testament and Wills: In practical terms, we should make legal arrangements for the distribution of our possessions and the care of our loved ones after our passing. This ensures that our earthly affairs are handled according to our wishes and responsibilities are met.

Community and Support: We should not face the preparation for death alone. Our Christian community can provide support, comfort, and guidance during these times. We should engage in conversations about death and share our concerns and wishes with trusted fellow believers.

Prayer and Surrender: Ultimately, we must surrender our lives and our deaths to God through prayer. Just as Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42), we too should surrender to God’s will and trust in His timing.

Preparing for our own death is not a morbid task but a reflection of our faith, hope, and love in Christ. It allows us to live with purpose and die with confidence, knowing that we are transitioning from this temporary life to the eternal joy of being with our Savior.

May God’s grace and peace be with you as you continue to walk in the footsteps of our Lord, even as you prepare for the day when you will meet Him face to face.
